In order to cultivate new generation of physician-scientists and academic successors, China Medical Unviersity selected 16 MD-MS/PhD medicine and Chinese medicine undergraduates and 11 PhD students to visit the University of California Irvine campus (UCI) and the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) for eight days this summer. The students were able to benefit from the research experience of the UCI and the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) for eight days, and were advised by several professors, including Mien-Chie Hung, Vice President of MDACC.

Under the lead of President Wen-Hwa Lee and Vice President Jyh-Hong Chen, a group of 27 Medicine and Chinese Medicine students from the China Medical University received funding from the Ministry of Education under the International Joint Talent Development Program . From August 19th to 27th, the Institute of Biomedical Sciences , led by Associate Professor Shao-Chun Wang, Associate Professor Wei-Chien Huang, Associate Professor Yuh-Pyng Sher, and Associate Professor Weita Lai, visited the University of California Irvine campus (UCI) and the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) in Houston, Texas. (Texas Medical Center), Baylor College of Medicine, Rice University, University of Texas, Methodist Medical Center and etc.

The visit to UCI at the University of California, Irvine was hosted by Kyoko Yokomori, a senior professor in the Department of Biochemistry, and coincided with President WenHwa Lee's summer visit to the United States, so the bilateral academic symposium between Taiwan and the United States was supervised by President Lee, and more than ten UCI professors in the fields of cancer, stem cell, and neurobiology were invited to introduce their research topics to students and answer their questions. Four UCI faculty members also met face-to-face with UCI professors to establish collaborative relationships on their research. In the evening, President Li and his wife, Academician Pan Yuhua, also hosted a fine dinner for all the CMU professors,students, as well as a number of UCI professors.

On the 21st, the Director of the Stem Cell Center of UCI and three senior laboratory leaders introduced the research results of the Center in brain and spine diseases to the participants, and the delegation also held a poster discussion with various UCI team members, which was the highlight of the UCI visit.

The delegation of CMU faculty and students moved to Houston Medical Center in Houston, Texas, on the 22nd, where Academician Mien-Chie Hung, as the Vice President of Anderson Cancer Center and Chairman of the Department of Molecular Cell Oncology, invited many distinguished scholars from MDACC, Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), Rice University, and Methodist Medical Center (BCM)such as Professor Di-hua Yu and Professor Ming-Jer Tsai to give seminars for the CMU delegation. The delegation was introduced to the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) on the planning of postgraduate and research funds by Deputy Director and Team Leaders of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston, TECO. In the evening, we visited the MDACC Hospital and the laboratory of Academician Mien-Chie Hung, who shared his research experience with us in an interesting way.At the same time, the delegation visited NASA and was hosted by TECO Director Chen at the Astronaut Team's home restaurant.

Professor Shao-Chun Wang, the delegation leader, said the purpose of this exchange visit is to provide medical and doctoral students with a high level of enthusiasm for academic research the opportunity to learn about foreign biomedical research, to encourage students to enter their research careers, and to assist aspiring students in their future career planning.

In addition, the delegation also further strengthened the interaction with renowned universities in the U.S. and promoted opportunities for future student training and research collaboration prepare for the upcoming international symposium to be held at China Medical University on October 20-21.

With the support of the Ministry of Education's "International Joint Talent Cultivation Program", China Medical University has expanded its academic collaboration through the cooperative platform with UCI and MDACC. The summer faculty and students' study visit to the U.S. allowed students to experience the world-class biomedical research environment on the one hand, and demonstrated the effectiveness of the University's emphasis on thinking and actively promoting English teaching on the other.The visit was an inspiration to the students in planning their research careers and a good foundation for nurturing a new generation of physician scientists and academic successors in the future.
